SAVS Celebrates Nutrition Month

Nutrition Parade, July 31, 2014
Annually, the month of July is Nutrition Month and schools nationwide are enjoined to celebrate it through various activities that would help spread the message of the chosen theme. This year, activities for the celebration center around the theme: "Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan."

For its part, San Andres Vocational School (SAVS) conducted several activities that involved the students, faculty members, and the community for the Nutrition Month Celebration. For the whole month of July, teachers and students are were doing various campaigns to promote healthy eating through bulletin displays, cooking demonstrations, lectures, and feeding activities. The task of putting together these activities was given to the Technical-Vocational Education (TVE) Department, with Mrs. Gracia S. Belmonte, as the overall Chairman.

The highlights of the celebration comes during the Culminating Program on the last day of the month, July 31, 2014. The activities started with a parade participated in SAVS students and faculty members. The parade went around the town proper of San Andres.

With students carrying huge banner and different nutritious food products such as fruits and vegetables, the parade successfully called the attention of the local residents and were reminded of the importance of right nutrition. Upon going back to school, as the parade ends, students enjoyed a hearty snack of breads and fruit juice prepared and distributed by the students of Food Processing.

When everyone settled after the snacks, the Opening Program followed shortly. The focus of the program is the message by an invited speaker who talked about the theme for this year's Nutrition Month Celebration. The speaker, Mr. Erwin R. Bergonio, who is currently the head nurse of the Dialysis Center of Juan M. Alberto Memorial District Hospital in San Andres, Catanduanes, talked about various ways to combat malnutrition, which is prevalent in the province especially among children and adolescents, and prevent it from becoming a disaster in magnitude. The school expressed its gratitude through some word of thanks expressed by Mrs. Teresita Araojo, Head Teacher III of the Languages Department, speaking on behalf of the School Pricipal, Ms. Amelia R. Eusebio, who was out-of-town for an official function.

Right after the Opening Program was the annoucement of the start of the various contests. Held simultaneously inside the SAVS Multi-Purposed Hall were the Slogan-Making Contest, Poster-Making Contest, Nutri-Exhibit, and Nutri-Cooking Challenge. In the afternoon of the same day, more contests were conducted - the Essay Writing Contest (Filipino) and Nutri-Quiz.

Poster-Making Contest Twenty-four (24) students participated in the contest and transformed their ideas of the theme into posters based on the theme. Christian Kyle Tubice's (IV-Rizal) work was declared as 1st Place winner.

Slogan-Making Contest The contest was participated in by twelve (12) students from different grade levels. The third place was won by Adrian de Quiroz of 7-Diamond, second place by Marcelo Gianan of IV-Luna, and first place was by Johanna Lindsay Araojo.

Essay Writing Contest Seventeen (17) students joined the essay writing contest, which used Filipino as the medium of the essay. The essay of Joy Sontillano (IV-Rizal) was declared as the third place winner, that of Richard Abiner of 7-Diamond was second place winner and the one by Shenaren Soneja of IV-Rizal was the first place.

Nutri-Quiz Thirty-nine (39) students joined the quiz held in the afternoon of July 31 at the Multi-purpose Hall. The contestants were given oral questions classified as easy, average, and difficult. The questions were based on nutrition and this year's theme. After all the scores were tallied, Lynn Manlangit of IV-Rizal got th third place, Joal Cocjin of 9-Aguinaldo was second, and Shane Manlangit of IV-Rizal was the first place.

Nutri-Exhibit Six teams with ten members each made colorful and luscious displays of fruits, vegetables, and cooked food products. The group of 8 Narra students won as 3rd Place, students from 7-Diamond were the 2nd Place winners, and the 1st Place was the entry by 9-Aguinaldo students.




Nutri-Cooking Challenge. The contestants were given the same time to prepare a meal or dish out of the same kinds of ingredients. Nine pairs of students took the challenge. Dish by Rona Tolentino (IV-Gomez) and Joseph Alexandrei Guavez (IV-Rizal) won as 3rd Place, Marvin Molo and Lynn Manlangit both of IV-Rizal were 2nd Place, and Daneva Tarroquin and Joey Laurente Jr, also of IV-Rizal were the 1st Place winners.
